چکیده

A square (0, 1)-matrix X of order n ≥ 1 is called fully indecomposable if there exists no integer k with 1 ≤ k ≤ n− 1, such that X has a k by n− k zero submatrix. The reduced adjacency matrix of a bipartite graph G = (A,B,E) (having A ∪ B = {a1, ..., am} ∪ {b1, ..., bn} as vertex set, and E as edge set), is X = [xij ], 1 ≤ i ≤ m, 1 ≤ j ≤ n, where xij = 1 if aibj ∈ E and xij = 0 otherwise. A stable set of a graph G is a subset of pairwise nonadjacent vertices. The stability number of G, denoted by α(G), is the cardinality of a maximum stable set in G. A graph is called α-stable if its stability number remains the same upon both the deletion and the addition of any edge. We show that a connected bipartite graph has exactly two maximum stable sets that partition its vertex set if and only if its reduced adjacency matrix is fully indecomposable. We also describe a decomposition structure of α-stable bipartite graphs in terms of their reduced adjacency matrices. On the base of these findings we obtain both new proofs for a number of well-known theorems on the structure of matrices due to Brualdi (1966), Marcus and Minc (1963), Dulmage and Mendelsohn (1958), and some generalizations of these statements. Several new results on α-stable bipartite graphs and their corresponding reduced adjacency matrices are presented, as well. Two kinds of matrix product are also considered (namely, Boolean product and Kronecker product), and their corresponding graph operations. As a consequence, we obtain a strengthening of one Lewin’s theorem claiming that the product of two fully indecomposable matrices is a fully indecomposable matrix.

Some lower bounds for the $L$-intersection number of graphs

‎For a set of non-negative integers~$L$‎, ‎the $L$-intersection number of a graph is the smallest number~$l$ for which there is an assignment of subsets $A_v subseteq {1,dots‎, ‎l}$ to vertices $v$‎, ‎such that every two vertices $u,v$ are adjacent if and only if $|A_u cap A_v|in L$‎. ‎The bipartite $L$-intersection number is defined similarly when the conditions are considered only for the ver...

Constructing Graceful Graphs with Caterpillars

A graceful labeling of a graph G of size n is an injective assignment of integers from {0, 1,..., n} to the vertices of G, such that when each edge of G has assigned a weight, given by the absolute dierence of the labels of its end vertices, the set of weights is {1, 2,..., n}. If a graceful labeling f of a bipartite graph G assigns the smaller labels to one of the two stable sets of G, then f ...

Lovász-Schrijver SDP-operator, near-perfect graphs and near-bipartite graphs

We study the Lovász-Schrijver lift-and-project operator (LS+) based on the cone of symmetric, positive semidefinite matrices, applied to the fractional stable set polytope of graphs. The problem of obtaining a combinatorial characterization of graphs for which the LS+-operator generates the stable set polytope in one step has been open since 1990. We call these graphs LS+-perfect. In the curren...

META-HEURISTIC ALGORITHMS FOR MINIMIZING THE NUMBER OF CROSSING OF COMPLETE GRAPHS AND COMPLETE BIPARTITE GRAPHS

The minimum crossing number problem is among the oldest and most fundamental problems arising in the area of automatic graph drawing. In this paper, eight population-based meta-heuristic algorithms are utilized to tackle the minimum crossing number problem for two special types of graphs, namely complete graphs and complete bipartite graphs. A 2-page book drawing representation is employed for ...

Clustering and the Biclique Partition Problem

A technique for clustering data by common attribute values involves grouping rows and columns of a binary matrix to make the minimum number of submatrices all 1’s. As binary matrices can be viewed as adjacency matrices of bipartite graphs, the problem is equivalent to partitioning a bipartite graph into the smallest number of complete bipartite sub-graphs (commonly called “bicliques”). We show ...
